The Merida eSpresso 400 S EQ is a versatile electric hybrid bike that pairs Shimano’s reliable touring and commuting focused E6100 drive unit with the powerful Shimano E8035 downtube integrated battery, built around a comfortable and efficient frame platform. The two-component battery cover offers a softer outer layer, which reduces noise, seals the downtube perfectly and absorbs hits from debris easily, while the harder inner layer gives it a solid structural shape. Fast rolling 700c wheels are fitted with reliable Continental Ride Cruiser Tyres with puncture protection. The Suntour NEX front fork offers 63mm of travel, to swallow up any curbs or potholes along the way, while the Shimano Hydraulic Disc Brakes offer precise brake control in any weather conditions. Cables are all internally routed, ensuring a clean appearance and rattle free ride. The EQ means this bike comes equipped with front and rear lights, a kickstand, rear rack, full mudguards and an Abus 5650 frame lock.

Merida is an international bike brand with its headquarters in Taiwan, the R&D department is based near Stuttgart in Germany. To be based in Germany has historical reasons for MERIDA but the precise location was chosen specifically because the region around Stuttgart is one of the hot spots of the automotive and machine building industry which Germany is famous for and attracts a hugely skilled design and engineer labor force.

The Merida team are more than just highly trained and experienced bicycle creators – they simply love everything ‘bike’. Most of their R&D staff are daily bike commuters while others are serious mountain bikers, who regularly compete in Marathon, Enduro and Downhill competitions, or licensed road racers and even ambitious Ironman triathletes. Get the behind the scenes view of the Merida R&D centre and meet some of their key members of staff in the below video.
